Fernkloof Nature Reserve

Scenic Views of Hermanus

Fernkloof Nature Reserve is located within a few kilometres from anywhere in the town of Hermanus.  There are around 60 kilometres of hiking trails from easy contours to more challenging walks, all offering rewarding vistas over the Walker Bay coastline, the Klein River estuary and the surrounding mountains. The Reserve has a wide diversity of fynbos plants indigenous to the Cape Floral Kingdom, birds, insects and other fauna for which this environment is home.

A botanical garden at the entrance to Fernkloof Nature Reserve, offers opportunities for family picnics with views of the mountain and an introduction to indigenous flora.  A Visitors Information Centre houses a display of labelled plant specimens in bloom, refreshed weekly, and pocket-sized maps of the hiking trails.  There is no entry charge to the Reserve but donations to Hermanus Botanical Society, responsible for maintaining the garden and contributing to maintaining paths and clearing invasive aliens, can be made at the Visitors Centre or on the website
